VERONIKA MOSHNIKOVA, “Time Record on a Gray”, 2019
“Time Record” is Veronika Moshnikova’s monolog and her silence through which traumatic memory becomes vague. The artist describes the works as “an automatic countdown to forget”. The dots symbolize Moshnikova’s struggles to restart and recover from the cultural trauma and the loss of legal citizenship during and after the annexation of Crimea (“formerly” Ukraine) to Russia by the Russian Federation. Each point holds her grief, love memory, and a vulnerability to the changing nature of geopolitics outside the canvas. Each point records a transformation of the intangibles towards visibility. The brush unpacks a continuous drift back and forth between “insider” and “outsider”. It calls attention to self (re)positioning and the restructuring of “home” in sovereignty conflicts.
